Historical distribution

The historical distribution and demise of the Peninsula baboon

Description

Until relatively recently, the chacma baboon was distributed quite widely across the Cape Peninsula. The expansion of humans, in particular, has resulted in a sharp restriction both in population numbers and their ranges. This project aims to reconstruct the historical range of the Peninsula baoons from archival records, including scientific reports, parks records, and oral histories. In combination with genetic evidence, this information will be essential for understanding the extent of population reduction in these primates, and related conservation issues.
